The Iron Moose Club, breakfast lineup, activity signups, and the other daily operations of camp are now becoming routine and campers have settled in well. Meanwhile, the adventures that we engage in here on a daily basis are anything but routine. Even as I write, campers are building their skills in wakeboarding, skeet shooting, rock climbing, paintballing, and mountain biking, many of them for the first time. Last night ended well with our first all-camp game: A Photo Scavenger Hunt. Unique group challenges met every cabin along the way, and each camper was greeted with a bowl of rich Gifford’s ice cream in our camp store when they finished. Tommorow brings even greater excitement as we approach our first trip day. Campers will pack a lunch and spend an entire day using the skills they have learned by rock climbing, hiking, swimming in mountain streams, and mountain biking as they enjoy a handful of beautiful spots in the surrounding area. More to come on Thursday, when our first group of campers will already be out on a canoe trip!

If check-in day is an indicator of the kind of summer we are going to have here at MRO, then the future looks great! Not only were we blessed with beautiful weather, but we also had regular visits throughout the day from our resident moose! As more and more campers arrived, a yearling bull-moose that has been seen around the property from time to time showed up and visited the swimming area as well as the general entryway into camp! Nearly every parent who dropped off their child got the opportunity to see the moose, with some seeing it from as close as 15 yards from our waterfront!
After that exciting start, camp has settled in well in its first 24 hours. The campers already seem to be getting comfortable with each other and with their counselors. While I am writing now, our waterfront is a bustling hub of activity as campers make full use of our fleet of kayaks and canoes. They are enjoying the lake and preparing for their canoe trips later in the week. Meanwhile, others are scaling the climbing wall for the first time and still others are riding the trails on our mountain bikes. The adventure of 2008 is now well underway, and each camper here is already learning to enjoy the MRO experience!

This time of year Moose River Outpost all but bursts with the contained excitement of anticipation as each staff member trains hard, prays harder, and awaits the arrival of the first campers of the season. Even as I write, our first staff members have already arrived on site and are diligently preparing their hearts, minds, and bodies for a summer of service at camp. We are making ready a program that encourages campers, enables them to learn from some of life’s most difficult questions, and challenges them with new experiences that they will simply never forget. The readers of this blog over the summer will probably not get to strap into a climbing harness or pile into a river raft, but they will get to participate in the ministry of camp from a distance.
Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, I will be posting an update on this blog about the events of our camp sessions. You will get to hear about the adventures we are having, the lessons we are learning, and the memories we are making. More importantly you can actually fuel our ministry with your prayers. Our staff can be perfectly prepared, passionately motivated, and extraordinarily skilled, but if God does not work in the hearts of our campers, our work will be incomplete. For that reason, I ask that as you read each blog entry you will also join me in lifting up Moose River Outpost in prayer for the effectiveness of the ministry and the safety of every camper.
I will begin regular postings on Sunday the 6th, the first day of camp. Between now and then I will do my best to give updates on the progress of our staff training weeks. Thank you for your prayers and for sharing in the adventure of Moose River Outpost’s summer season!

Assistant Director Marcus Corey and his wife Heidi welcomed their second daughter into the world on Sunday! Both mother and child are healthy and doing well. Hadassah Mae Corey weighed in at 6 pounds, 13 ounces. She will join her 2-year-old sister Abishai as the two of them make up the youngest pair of campers at Moose River Outpost in 2008. We thank God for a safe delivery and praise Him for the creation of this beautiful new life. We ask your prayers for the family as they adjust and for Marcus as he begins changing diapers at nearly record speeds.

Do you live anywhere near Trumbull CT? If so, don’t make any plans for Thursday night! This Thursday, the 24th, I will be heading down to Trumbull to share memories and mountains of ice cream with MRO campers, alumni, and prospective campers.
If you have been to camp before and live near Trumbull, come on out, bring your friends along, and share some stories over ice cream! If you have not yet received an email or snail-mail message about the event yet, then you can get all the details at http://www.christiancamps.net/downloadables/trumbullscoop.pdf. If you love camp, or if you are just wondering what the excitement is all about, come on out, eat some ice cream, and get fired up for summer 2008!

Dear Friends of Moose River Outpost,
It is my great pleasure to introduce you to the Moose Tracks Blog. This blog will serve many purposes during the course of the camp year, the greatest of which will be to keep you connected with the camp you love so much. Moose River Outpost is many things: It is 7000 of the most beautiful acres in Maine. It is the newest of three world-class camps operated by Christian Camps and Conferences. It is a place with a rich history and a limitless future. More than anything, though, it is a gathering of people. As a new director, I can walk the grounds as often as I want and memorize every camp policy, but I will not know Moose River Outpost for what it really is until I can share it with each of you this summer and throughout this retreating season. That’s because the value of Moose River Outpost is held in hundreds of private accounts – each of you holds one. The relationships you’ve built, the lessons you’ve learned, and the memories you have made with your cabinmates are the most valuable assets of the camp. This blog serves to connect us, our memories, and our friends just a little more closely.
Moose Tracks will also provide us, the staff of MRO, with a way to tell you about important events at MRO, or in your area. Very soon, you will be hearing from me about a chance to see me or Marcus Corey in person as we visit your area. You will have a chance to ask questions about MRO and learn about what’s been happening with the ministry this year. Most importantly, you will get to spend an evening with other MRO and Brookwoods or Deer Run campers near your home. If you are interested in hosting a gathering like this or helping to organize one in your area, please contact me at craig@christiancamps.net.
Finally, this blog will act as a service for parents and others who can’t actually attend a summer session at camp. Each of you can check in here and learn about what the campers at MRO are up to. We will be posting summaries of some of our summer Bible studies, as well as highlights from the daily schedule at camp, and even some photos of what camp looks like while in operation.
Whether you are a camper whose bags have been packed since Christmas for another action packed summer, or a diligent prayer partner who regularly seeks the Lord on behalf of camp, this blog is for you. Thank you for making Moose River Outpost a ministry that honors God by being not just a place, but also a collection of memories and relationships that draw us closer to him.
“Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing”
-Thessalonians 5:11
Keep checking in to learn about MRO events at camp or in your area!
